A few months ago, we can all remember our social media pages being flooded with articles concerning Christian bakery owners refusing to serve same sex couples. That was the same time that word of our coffee catering service started to spread a little around town. I started to have conversations about the topic in general, what Nomad stood for as a business, and how my own personal convictions and beliefs played into decisions I made as the owner. I am a Christian. Politically, I would probably aggravate most democrats and republicans alike if certain topics were brought up around me. So, what does that mean for Nomad?
Like I stated, I am a Christian. Nomad Coffee Company can't serve a religion because it's a business, not a person. I have personal, political, religious, and spiritual beliefs and opinions. Nomad Coffee Company doesn't have feelings, opinions, or beliefs ... it's a business. With that, the summary of Nomad’s stance is that all are welcome to enjoy and to embrace anything that Nomad Coffee Company has to offer. We are glad to serve the gay, straight, Christian, non-Christian, atheist, coffee connoisseurs, coffee skeptics, and all other communities in any type of service we provide, including catering receptions.
I know some will ask, "How can you separate your personal beliefs from your business's practices with such ease?" The answer is simple: because even though I am the owner of the business, I and the business are two completely separate entities. When I decided to establish an LLC, I was deciding to legally separate my business from myself. Even though some things that I stand for and cherish personally (such as community, love, respect, and coffee) bleed over into Nomad Coffee Company, it does not mean that Nomad Coffee Company has to abide by all of our moral, spiritual, and personal convictions and obligations.
I understand that some business owners choose to be strict regarding their business practices, but Nomad chooses to allow our little business to teach us about culture, to connect us with people that are different than ourselves, and to create opportunities for community and love.
Some may label us as "sell outs" or judge our decision as merely trying to selfishly gain more customers. That's not it. We understand that we may very well lose potential customers with this decision. And that's ok.
